New Article: More Challenges Ahead for Battery Energy Storage Systems: US Anti-Dumping Tariffs on BESS Components

On July 17, the U.S. Department of Commerce revealed preliminary anti-dumping tariffs of 93.5% on active anode-grade graphite imports from China, a critical component in lithium-ion batteries crucial for many utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS).  In his most recent article, Lucian Gavriliuc, PE, E3’s Executive Director of Energy Storage, examines the implications for the U.S. storage market.  Noting that it’s a supply chain issue, Lucian highlights the impact on project costs, equipment reliability, and financial aspects. Given the prevalent use of Chinese-origin graphite in most BESS projects, including those with LFP chemistries, he urges stakeholders such as developers and investors to reassess their underlying assumptions regarding supplies.

If you are launching a new energy storage initiative or exploring ways to reduce project risk, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss. Please feel free to reach out to Lucian at Lucian.gavriluic@e3co.com or 425‐393‐3598.
